President Yuan Shouqi Heads UK Delegation

To further promote the international presence of Jiangsu University, President Yuan Shouqi headed a delegation to Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the University of Leeds, the University of Leicester, and the University of Manchester from November 9th to 12th.

On November 9th the delegation visited QS and met with Nunzio Quacquarelli, President of QS, Ben Sowter, General Manger of University Ranking, and Zhang Yan, Head of the China region. They exchanged views on the condition of development at each institution, higher education, international teaching and the QS ranking system. President Quacquarelli of QS praised Jiangsu University’s strength and development.

On November 9th and 10th President Yuan participated in the International Conference on Food Quality and Security and paid a visit to the University of Leeds. The University of Leeds is ranked eighteenth in the UK and eighty-seventh in the world in the 2015 QS World University Ranking system.

Professor Malcolm Povey, President of the conference, held a talk with delegates. President Yuan described the progress in the field of food science at Jiangsu University and reiterated the establishment of the China-UK joint laboratory would be a model in the process of internationalization of JSU.

On November 10th Sir Alan Langlands, President of the University of Leeds met President Yuan’s delegation. They reached a common understanding on the teacher exchange, scientific cooperation, joint training of students, establishment of the international joint laboratories and multi-level cooperation. President Yuan and President Langlands signed a joint agreement for Jiangsu University and the University of Leeds to build an international joint laboratory. It was agreed that the Joint Lab would promote overall cooperation in the fields of food, energy, chemicals, and other disciplines.

On November 11th President Yuan visited the University of Leicester and had a conversation with Vice President Professor Martin A. Barstow. A consensus was reached in terms of personnel training, the teacher exchange, students’ joint cultivation and regular academic exchange. The agreement for an international joint laboratory was signed as well.

On November 12th President Yuan visited the University of Manchester. The University of Manchester is ranked seventh in the UK and thirtieth in the world in the 2015 QS World University Ranking System. It is one of the world's top scientific research and teaching institutions and has cultivated 27 Nobel Prize winners.

Professor Lin li, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and President of the Laser Association of International Industrial Applications met with the delegation. They made an agreement to cooperate in the fields of machinery, energy, materials, aerospace, and to jointly build a laboratory of laser shock, as well as to jointly develop students and teachers’ scientific cooperation on mechanical engineering, energy and power engineering. After the meeting, Yuan visited the National Institute of graphene research, University of Manchester, Laser Processing Research Center and the University Student Learning Center.

All four of these European institutions are advanced universities or research institutions. Enhancing exchange and cooperation with them plays a significant role in the process of developing Jiangsu University’s presence on the world stage.
