About JSU

Jiangsu University (JSU) is a key comprehensive university approved by the Ministry of Education in August 2001 through the merger of the former Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Zhenjiang Medical College, and Zhenjiang Normal College. It is jointly supported by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. It has been recognized as one of the first high-level universities in Jiangsu Province, a National Exemplary Institution for Undergraduate Teaching Excellence, and a National Model University for Graduate Employment, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, as well as a pioneering institution in quality certification for international student education.

History

With a century-long educational heritage rooted in the Sanjiang Normal School established in 1902, JSU traces its origins to the Zhenjiang Agricultural Machinery Institute (1960), founded under the directive of Chairman Mao Zedong that "agricultural modernization hinges on mechanization." JSU was designated one of 88 national key universities by the State Council in 1978 and became one of the first institutions authorized to confer doctoral and master's degrees in 1981. As China's earliest institution to establish agricultural machinery disciplines and systematically develop agricultural engineering education, JSU has pioneered national contributions by cultivating the first cohorts of agricultural machinery undergraduates, master's graduates, and China's first PhD and postdoctoral researchers in the field. Its philosophy of "integrating engineering strengths with agricultural innovation" has driven technological advancement and rural revitalization, solidifying its unique identity in advancing agricultural mechanization and modernization.

Location

JSU is located in Zhenjiang, a well-known, beautiful, and historic city on the south bank of the Yangtze River. It is also where the Yangtze River cuts across the Grand Canal of China.

JSU has 34 academic and research units. It offers 98 undergraduate programs, 16 doctoral programs of the first-level discipline, 46 master’s programs of the first-level discipline, as well as professional master's programs of 26 categories. These programs are offered in the following 12 academic disciplines: Engineering, Agriculture, Science, Medicine, Management, Economics, Philosophy, Law, Education, Literature, Art and Interdisciplinary Studies. The university also houses 14 postdoctoral research stations.

Its consistent recognition as one of China's Top 50 Innovative Universities and Top 50 Universities for Technological Commercialization underscores its research prowess.

Groundbreaking studies from the university have graced the pages of Science and other elite journals, while its innovations have secured 16 National Scientific and Technological Achievement Awards, 3 China Patent Gold Awards, and 3 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prizes for Science and Technology Innovation—a testament to its impact on global academia and industry.

Global Engagement & Partnership

JSU drives global connectivity through a multidimensional internationalization strategy. It actively supports faculty and student exchanges, while attracting international scholars through competitive recruitment programs.

It has forged 256 institutional collaborations across 66 countries/regions, including leading universities in the U.S. (e.g., Arcadia University), UK (Cranfield University), Australia (Queensland University). Approved by the Ministry of Education, JSU established a Chinese-foreign cooperative education institution, i.e. Jiangsu University Cranfield Tech Futures Graduate Institute, and two Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, as well as in Biological Sciences. JSU has co-established Confucius Institute with The University of Niš (Serbia), conducted 26 joint degree programs in collaboration with Queensland University (Australia), North Arizona University (USA) and so on. JSU anchors its international scientific impact through UN-endorsed and ministerial-level platforms, including the United Nations Industrial Development Organization's Global Agricultural Modernization and Food Safety Education and Training Center, the International Joint Research Center for Health Management on Key Structure of High-End Equipment, the International Cooperative Research Center for Fluid Engineering Equipment Energy-Saving Technology, the World Food Preservation Research Center, etc.

As a thought leader in global academia, JSU spearheads The Jiangsu-UK World-Class University Consortium (serving as inaugural rotating chair and permanent secretariat), the International University Consortium for Agricultural Engineering (chair institution).
