July 2, Associate Professor Kathleen Koening at University of Cincinnati of the United States visited Jiangsu University and gave a lecture entitled “Basic education in America: objective, standards and practice” in the 3rd Lecture Hall of the International Meeting Center. The lecture, presided over by Prof. Xu Boqiang, Deputy Dean of the Science Faculty, was attended by faculties and students of the Department of Physics as well as Wang Shanmin, Party Secretary of the Science Faculty.

In her lecture, Dr. Koening introduced the new scientific framework K-12 education in the United States, comparing in details the American and the Chinese educational methods and admission model at both the secondary and the tertiary level. Finally, Koening talked with teachers from the Department of Physics on student education and teacher training. To sum up, this lecture broadened the view of faculties and students on new concepts and methods in contemporary physics education and research and would help promote the teaching reform and talent cultivation of Jiangsu University.

Kathleen Koening’s main research interests are discovery education, capability cultivation education, scientific reasoning, science teacher development and cultivation, etc. She is currently Associate Professor of the College of Teacher Training and Further Education and the Department of Physics, the University of Cincinnati. In 2013 she was awarded the title of 10 Best Professors of Ohio State.
