ACM Turing Award Laureate Academician John E. Hopcroft Visits JSU

On July 7, ACM Turing Award Laureate, winner of the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the People's Republic of China, winner of the Friendship Award of the Chinese Government, foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, academician of the National Academy of Sciences, academician of the National Academy of Engineering, and academician of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Prof. John E. Hopcroft visited Jiangsu University (JSU) and held talks with teachers and students.

Secretary of the CPC Jiangsu University (JSU) Committee Li Hongbo met with Prof. John E. Hopcroft. Vice President of JSU Prof. Wang Jingquan and Prof. Cai Yingfeng attended the meeting.

Secretary Li Hongbo delivered a welcome speech on behalf of JSU, introduced the university's discipline advantages and achievements on internationalization. He expects both sides to strengthen communication and cooperation, continue to promote cooperation in higher education between China and the United States, and facilitate mutual benefits and win-win outcomes in innovative talent cultivation, cutting-edge technology research and development, etc.

Secretary Li Hongbo presented Prof. John E. Hopcroft with the appointment letter of "Honorary Professor of Jiangsu University". Vice President Wang Jingquan presented him with the appointment letter of "Chief Scientist of Jiangsu University Learning Science and Technology Laboratory". And Vice President Cai Yingfeng presented Prof. John E. Hopcroft with a souvenir from JSU.

Dialogue with Prof. John E. Hopcroft was held at Building A, President of JSU Prof. Xing Weihong, Vice President of JSU Prof. Zou Xiaobo attended the event.

At the event, President Xing Weihong presented Prof. John E. Hopcroft with the appointment letter of "Leader of the Interdisciplinary Study of Science and Technology at Jiangsu University".

Prof. John E. Hopcroft delivered an academic report titled AI and Education. He pointed out that in the era of artificial intelligence, more attention needs to be paid to the high-quality development of higher education and the cultivation of top-notch talents. He actively advocates and participates in the "101 Plan", promotes the participation of multiple universities in the plan, and constructs the "four first-class" system, namely first-class core courses, first-class core textbooks, first-class teacher teams, and first-class practical projects by concentrating national strengths. With such basic elements courses, textbooks, teachers, and practical projects, he uses "small incisions" to drive the "big reform" of education and teaching models. Prof. John E. Hopcroft proposed to actively promote the development of high-quality undergraduate education, adhere to the quality of education and teaching as an important reference for university evaluation, and allow more universities to participate in educational and teaching reforms and benefit from them.

During the interactive session, teachers and students had a warm exchange with Prof. John E. Hopcroft. He sent a message to the teachers and students present that life is only once and should be enjoyed. The role of education is to help you discover what you love and guide you towards a career that you can enjoy.

Prof. John E. Hopcroft also visited the university history museum, the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Agricultural Machinery Equipment Theory, and the laboratory of School of Computer Science and Communication Engineering.

Prof. John E. Hopcroft is a world-renowned computer scientist and educator, the proposer of the "101 Plan", academician of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Academy of Arts and Sciences, and foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1986, he was awarded the highest global award in the field of computer science, the Turing Award. In 2005, he received the Harry Goodall Memorial Award from the American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In 2007, he received the Outstanding Service Award from the American Computer Research Society. In 2009, he was awarded the International Computer Society Fellow and the Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award. In 2010, he received the John von Neumann Medal from the American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In 2016, he was awarded the highest honor for foreign experts in China - the "Chinese Government Friendship Award". In 2024, he was awarded the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the People's Republic of China.
