Fellow of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada Visits JSU
November 7, 2023

On October 27, Fellow of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada Prof. Aftab Mufti, visit Jiangsu University (JSU) for academic exchange and gave a lecture titled Role of Civionics in Civil Structural Health Monitoring. The lecture was chaired by Vice President of JSU Prof. Wang Jingquan. More than 100 teachers and students from Faculty of Civil Engineering and Mechanics and Institute of Structural Health Management attended the lecture.

Prof. Mufti talked about a new interdisciplinary discipline named Civionics Engineering that combines Civil and Electronics and introduces the creation of Canada’s Intelligent Sensing of Innovative Structures and the development of civil electronic engineering. Through collaborative research with multiple universities and research institutions in Canada, he successfully carried out structural health monitoring based on civil electronic engineering for many bridges, dams, and other engineering projects in Canada. These successful cases demonstrated the broad application prospects of civil electronic engineering in structural health monitoring. Prof. Mufti also shared valuable experience in setting up relevant graduate courses and cultivating talents at the University of Manitoba over the years.
In the interaction section, teachers and students actively asked questions about their own research experience, and Prof. Mufti provided detailed answers.
Teachers and students said that this lecture greatly stimulated their scientific research interest, and they gained a deeper understanding of civil electronic engineering and related fields, which provided new perspectives and ideas for subsequent scientific research work.

Prof. Mufti is the fellow of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada, the Honorary Professor of Faculty of Engineering of University of Manitoba, Director of Structural Innovation and Monitoring Technologies Inc. (SIMTReC) team, and former Chief Scientist and Chairman of Canadian New Materials and Smart Sensing Research Network. His main research area includes fiber reinforced materials, fiber optic sensing, finite element analysis, bridge engineering, and structural health monitoring. Prof. Mufti is the founder of International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure (ISHMII). He has edited or co-edited 5 monographs and published more than 350 scientific papers, won 24 awards and honors, and was elected as the fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC) in 2013.
