August 18, Vice President Fusanori Miura of Yamaguchi University of Japan paid an academic visit to JU and gave a lecture entitled “Application of Satellite Remote Sensing Technology to Natural Disaster Mitigation”. The lecture was presided over by Prof. Luo Ying, Dean of the School of Civil Engineering & Mechanics.

In his lecture, Prof. Miura introduced the 2011 earthquake in eastern Japan, recent serious natural disasters, application of satellite remote sensing technology, international cooperation in the process of disaster prevention from the perspective of reducing natural disasters by means of satellite remote sensing technology. The excellent presentation by Prof. Fusanori Miura aroused the interest of faculties and students from the School of Civil Engineering & Mechanics, the School of the Environment & Safety Engineering and the School of Energy & Power Engineering of Jiangsu University and the speaker and the audience later went into enthusiastic discussions on prevention and reduction of natural disasters.

Prof. Fusanori Miura is an outstanding expert in disaster prevention science and engineering, disaster reduction information system, earthquake engineering and structure dynamics, etc. He has published 5 books in collaboration with other scientists and nearly 200 papers himself. He was once Guest Associate Professor at the College of Engineering, Cornell University and Director of Design and Product Innovation Center and currently Professor at Science and Engineering Research Institute, Yamaguchi University, Vice President of Yamaguchi University, and Guest Professor at Udayana University of Indonesia. He was once granted such awards and honorary titles as Disaster Prevention Minister, Distinguished Service Medal of Japan’s Ube City, Sci-Tech and Culture Education Award.
