June 11, Dr. Sandra Hordis at Arcadia University of the US visits Jiangsu University and gave a lecture entitled “Cultures in translation”. In her lecture, Dr. Hordis explains the fundamental concepts in literary translation and talks about Chaucer’s lies, the Bible’s translation hesitancies, and the hidden agendas of Seamus Heaney’s popular modern translation of Beowulf. After her presentation she answered the questions raised by the audience about difference in Chinese and American education, the issue of “publish or perish” in the American colleges and universities, etc.

Dr. Sandra Hordis is currently an Associate Professor of Medieval Studies and Director of International Academic Programs at Arcadia University, has published in numerous journals and presented her work frequently at conferences, including in LATCH: Literary Artifacts in Theory, Culture and History and The Heroic Age, and her work entitled Medieval English Comedy is thought highly of by scholars in the academic circles.
