May 17-24, a group of delegates headed by Mr. Song Yuqing, Vice President of Jiangsu University visited four universities in America and Canada. The Chinese visitors had had extensive talks and discussions with heads of the visited schools on scientific cooperation, exchanges of teachers and students, joint granting of degrees, joint instruction of doctoral candiates, etc.

When in the US, the Chinese delegates visited Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne and Wayne State University. The Chinese delegates were interviewed by Professor Vicky L. Carwein, President of Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne, a Vice President in charge of scientific work, postgraduate programs, and undergraduate programs, heads of the International Office and the School of Engineering Technology and Computer Science, as well as some distinguished professors. With a brief introduction to each other of their school histories and features, the visitors and hosts held talks on cooperation in exchanges of teachers and students, mutual recognition of credits, joint instruction of students, joint granting of degrees (3+2), etc. The Chinese delegates also visited the laboratories and other teaching facilities of the University. When later they went to visit the College of Engineering of Wayne State University, the Chinese delegates had talks with Dean Farshad Fotouhi on cooperation in exchanges of teachers and students, mutual recognition of credits, joint instruction of students, joint granting of degrees (3+2), etc. More important was that they had reached an agreement on the construction of a key joint laboratory. The Delegation then visited related laboratories and interviewed the visiting scholars of Jiangsu University there in Wayne State University.

In Canada, the Chinese delegates visited the University of Windsor and Wilfrid Laurier University. When in the University of Windsor, the Chinese delegates visited the Division of Engineering and the Division of Economy and Management and their laboratories, and met with Dr. Clayton Smith, Vice Chancellor in charge of international cooperation and exchanges. The visitors and hosts held talks and finally reached an agreement on cooperation in exchanges of teachers and students, mutual recognition of credits, joint instruction of students, joint granting of degrees (3+2), etc. When in Wilfrid Laurier University, the Chinese delegates and the hosts looked back upon the achievements that had been made since 2005 in the joint granting of a combined degree (3+2) in “optical information science and technology” and they reached an agreement through negotiations on furthering the scope of cooperation. Mr. Song Yuqing, Vice President of Jiangsu University and Dr. Tom Buckley, Vice Chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University singed the agreement on a 5-year cooperation program. Finally, the Chinese delegates visited the media production and transmission technology companies of the University and both parties extended the wishes to carry out further cooperation.
