The “New Era, New Mission, New Task--High-end Forum on Cultivation of Innovative Talents in Materials Science and Engineering” was held in JSU from May 17^th to 19^th 2019, sponsored by the Teaching Steering Committee of Material Specialty, and directed by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education. More than 330 experts and scholars from more than 120 universities, 5 publishing houses, China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation gathered in JSU to acutely analyze the situation and challenges facing the cultivation of materials talents, further clarify the new mission, tasks of materials undergraduate educators in the new era and jointly discuss the new way to promote the reform and development of materials undergraduate education and teaching in China.

On the morning of the 18^th, the opening ceremony was held in the auditorium of JSU, Academician Zhou Yu, President of Harbin University of Technology, chairman of this forum, and Director of the Teaching Steering Committee of Material Specialty of the Ministry of Education, Prof. Jiang Maofa, Deputy Director of the Teaching Steering Committee of Material Specialty of the Ministry of Education, Prof. Geng Lin, Secretary General, Prof. Zhu Meifang and more than 30 members of the Committee, Yang Qiubo, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Department of the Ministry of Education, Wang Chengbin, Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, Shao Jin, Dean of the Higher Education Department of the Jiangsu Education, Prof. Yuan Shouqi, Chair of University Committee for CPC affairs of JSU, and more than 400 of the representatives and participants from relevant departments of JSU attended the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Yan Xiaohong, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Forum and President of JSU.

During the introduction of the National Teaching Achievement Award (Material) in 2018, five major Achievers, Prof. Li Hejun of Northwest Polytechnic University, Prof. Zhu Meifang of Donghua University, Prof. Dong Lijie of Wuhan University of Technology, Prof. Wang Hongjie of Xi'an Jiaotong University and Prof. Cheng Xiaonong of Jiangsu University, shared their experiences in the reform, innovation and practice of the cultivation of undergraduate training.

Meanwhile, the working meeting of the Steering Committee of Material Specialty Teaching of the Ministry of Education was convened, discussing and exchange on four topics: first-class professional construction, professional certification of Engineering education, three-level professional certification and "Six Excellence and One Top-notch" plan 20. The working meeting of the committee is chaired by Prof. Geng Lin.

This forum is to deeply implement the spirit of the National Education Conference and the National Undergraduate Education Work Conference of the New Era. With the theme of Innovating Training Mode, Strengthening Connotation Construction, Promoting the Integration of Industry and Education and Comprehensively Improving Quality. The forum focused on hot topics such as new concepts, new modes, new measures and professional certification of engineering education for undergraduate education in materials. They carried out discussions by combining thematic speeches with exchanges on discussions. At the same time, papers related to the theme of the forum will be collected and officially published by the Higher Education Press.
