September 28, Ma Kai, secretary general of State Council of China, granted Jiangsu University’s part-time professor Guenter Elsbett the Chinese Government Friendship Award. On the afternoon of September 29, premier Wen Jiabao had a meeting with the 50 award winners, including professor Elsbett, and their family dependents, and invited them to attend the evening banquet for the 63th anniversary of the founding of People’s Republic of China. The Chinese Government Friendship Award is the highest-level award granted to foreign experts who have made outstanding contribution to the China’s economical construction and social development. This year’s 50 winners come from 22 countries. Since 1991, 1,249 foreign experts have won the Chinese Government Friendship Award. Jiangsu University employed Prof. Elsbett as a part-time professor in November 1990. He has long been engaged in the research of the advanced technology of internal-combustion engines, has come to Jiangsu University dozens of times for academic visits, and acted as a go-between for the cooperation between Jiangsu University and the universities in Germany.
